Study Visit of VSCNU Interpreting Trainers to Université Libre de Bruxelles

A group of six conference interpreting trainers from Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University (VSCNU) completed a study visit to Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Brussels, Belgium, held from 27 March to 4 April 2026. The visit was designed as an intensive professional exchange aimed at strengthening methodological approaches and further developing interpreter training in line with European standards.
The programme of the visit was highly comprehensive and practice-oriented. It included observing a wide range of interpreting classes at different levels (Master’s Year 1 and Year 2), covering both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting across multiple language combinations.
An important component of the visit was the opportunity to observe student interpreting practice during the Brussels Book Fair, where interpreting students worked in real-life conditions, providing interpretation for public events. This offered valuable insight into how training can be effectively combined with authentic professional practice.
Particular attention was given to teaching methodologies, classroom organisation, progression of skills across levels, and approaches to assessment and feedback. The delegation also engaged in discussions with ULB faculty on curriculum design, pedagogical strategies, and the integration of professional standards into academic training. A dedicated session was held on the structure and content of the ULB interpreting programme, followed by an in-depth exchange of experience between the two institutions.
In addition, the programme included a visit to the European Parliament (DG LINC), where participants received a presentation on interpreting services with a focus on the Ukrainian booth, as well as a guided tour of the institution. This component provided valuable insight into the professional environment and expectations of EU institutions.
The visit provided a productive platform for exchanging best practices in interpreter training, enabling VSCNU staff to compare teaching approaches, reflect on their own methodologies, and identify areas for further development. Exposure to a well-established European training programme, such as that of ULB, contributed to a deeper understanding of how academic training can be effectively aligned with the demands of the professional market.
Such initiatives play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of conference interpreter training. By fostering international cooperation, encouraging methodological reflection, and strengthening links between academia and professional institutions, study visits of this kind contribute significantly to the continuous development of both teaching staff and training programmes.
