VSCNU Roundtable: Addressing the Strategic Challenges of Modern Maker Education

On April 21, an online training for teachers of higher education institutions, “Pedagogy of Invention: Challenges of Modern Maker Education”, was held, organised within the framework of the REFINE project “Rebuilding the Future: Empowering Educators and Students through Cross-Border Cooperation and Pedagogy of Invention” (EDUC-WIDE SEED PROJECTS – 2024).

The event brought together scholars to discuss the essence of invention pedagogy and the challenges and opportunities of implementing makerspaces in the modern educational landscape.

The co-author of the REFINE project, Larysa Dahl Kolesnyk, PhD in Educational Sciences, Senior Researcher at the Faculty of Humanities, Sports and Educational Sciences at the University of Southeast Norway, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech.

The following reports were presented during the training:

— “Sustainable development as the basis of inventive pedagogy in modern education” (Prof. Lyudmila Matsuk);

— “Innovative trends in education. Maker pedagogy” (Prof. Olena Budnyk);

— “Inventive pedagogy and maker pedagogy: methodological models” (Assoc. Prof. Marianna Matishak, Assoc. Prof. Iryna Skomoroovska).

Head of the Department of Theory and Methods of Preschool and Special Education, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Lyudmila Matsuk, highlighted the key principles of sustainable development pedagogy and outlined the features of implementing the pedagogy of invention and makership to achieve sustainable development goals.

Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Primary Education and Educational Innovations, Olena Budnyk, focused on innovative trends in modern education, emphasising the possibilities of integrating makership and invention into the educational systems of different countries.

Associate professors of the Department of Theory and Methods of Preschool and Special Education, Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences Iryna Skomoroovska and Marianna Matishak revealed the essence and content of the pedagogy of invention and makership, presented methodological models for the development and implementation of inventive ideas, and also emphasised the role of the teacher and the potential of these approaches for the development of the personality of education seekers.

Representatives of higher education institutions of Ukraine, in particular the National University “Chernihiv Collegium” named after Taras Shevchenko, Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University named after Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi, Hlukhiv National Pedagogical University named after Oleksandr Dovzhenko, and Carpathian National University named after Vasyl Stefanyk, participated in the training.

The participants showed significant interest in the event topic, discussed the challenges of implementing innovative pedagogy in modern educational institutions, and outlined prospects for further cooperation to improve the professional training of future teachers.
