Round table in honour of the 90th anniversary of Volodymyr Grigorovich Matviyishyn

A Round Table was held at Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Volodymyr Matviyishyn, an outstanding Ukrainian scholar and one of the founders of modern comparative literary studies in Ukraine. The event became a significant platform for honouring the professor’s scientific legacy and understanding the development of comparative literature in both domestic and global contexts.

The organisers of the Round Table were the Department of World Literature and Comparative Literature and the Department of French Philology. N. Ya moderated the event: Yatskiv, PhD, Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages.

The event brought together colleagues, students, and followers of Professor Matviyishyn, as well as university students and postgraduates, for whom the scientist’s figure serves as an example of humanity and high professionalism. The welcoming speeches were delivered by Vice-Rector Serhiy Sharyn and Dean of the Faculty of Philology Roman Golod, who emphasised the importance of the figure of the professor for the development of Ukrainian humanities and the formation of a modern scientific community.

Representatives of various educational and scientific institutions joined the work of the Round Table, including Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, Volodymyr Hnatyuk Ternopil National Pedagogical University, and Ivan Franko Lviv National University, as well as the Department of Ukrainian Literature of the I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, the University of Economics and Law “KROK”, Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University.

The scientific discussion was attended by Professor Stepan Khorob, Professor Ihor Kozlyk, Associate Professor Yarema Kravets, Professor Zoryana Lanovyk, Professor Maryana Lanovyk, Associate Professor Oleg Pylypyuk, Associate Professor Nataliya Mochernyuk, Associate Professor Nataliya Kosylo, Associate Professor Yevhen Lepyokhin, Associate Professor Tetyana Hulyak and others. The participants’ reports focused on various aspects of V. G. Matviyishyn’s scientific and public activities. Personal memories of the professor were shared, highlighting his exceptional erudition, pedagogical talent, nobility, and willingness to support younger colleagues. Special attention was paid to the scientist’s significant contribution to the establishment of comparative studies as a separate branch of Ukrainian literary studies, the development of a methodological basis for the study of interliterary relations, and the education of a whole generation of scientists who continue his traditions.

One of the key events of the Round Table was the presentation of a collective monograph prepared in honour of the 90th anniversary of Volodymyr Hryhorovych. It was presented by I. V. Devdyuk, PhD, Professor of the Department of World Literature and Comparative Literary Studies. She emphasised that the monograph not only honours the memory of the scientist but also demonstrates the continuity and scientific effectiveness of his school: the publication collects the works of two generations of researchers, who are united by a common intellectual field founded by Professor Matviyishyn. This was the basis for initiating the official registration of the “Professor Matviyishyn’s Scientific School of Comparative Literary Studies”, designed to develop and multiply his legacy.

The event ended with a particularly moving moment — a collective performance of “La Marseillaise,” which Professor Matviyshyn loved and often performed.
