The translation team from the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University participated in the sixth international medical mission, “Face the Future Ukraine,” in collaboration with the Canadian charitable foundation, Face the Future Foundation.
The goal of the “Face the Future Ukraine” mission is to treat Ukrainian military and civilians with severe head and neck injuries, exchange knowledge between medical professionals from Canada, the United States, and Ukraine, and improve the capacity of the healthcare system.
The work of the translation team, which was conducted in two stages, played a crucial role in achieving this goal.
The first stage of the team’s work consisted of the written translation of several medical materials and 26 presentations that American and Canadian specialists prepared for the VI International Symposium “Reconstructive Surgery of Military Head and Neck Injuries” and the VI International Symposium for Nurses “Peculiarities of Management of Patients with Military Injuries and Post-Traumatic Disorders.”
The translated materials contributed to improving the process of knowledge exchange between Ukrainian and foreign medical professionals. Team leader Valeriy Ganzin participated in the translation and editing of the “Mental Health Research Survey”, the purpose of which was to obtain data on the prevalence and impact of PTSD, anxiety, and depression among patients with facial injuries, their families and friends, medical professionals, and civilians.
The second phase of the team’s work consisted of providing translation support during two international symposia, patient reviews, press conferences, media interviews, and during surgical operations. High-quality interpretation ensured reliable communication between all members of the surgical teams, patients, and media representatives.
For the third consecutive year, students in the OR Master’s degree program, “English Language and Literature, Second Foreign Language, Translation,” have joined the team. Master’s students Oksana Pryimak, Oleg Kurtyak, and Nestor Bolshakov demonstrated a high level of mastery of both oral and written translation skills and became indispensable members of the faculty’s translation team.
Students participating in the “Face the Future Ukraine” missions have the opportunity to gain real-world experience in translation (oral and written) in challenging yet engaging environments, become part of an ambitious interdisciplinary team of professionals, and utilise their knowledge and expertise to achieve a significant goal.
Throughout all stages of the work, the members of the translation team demonstrated high skill and professionalism, which guarantees the effective continuation of international cooperation to overcome the war’s consequences and return wounded Ukrainians to everyday life.
