The official website of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities has published updated information on the positions of the best universities in the world included in the ranking as of July 2025. Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, which in the previous edition for January 2025 ranked 7th among Ukrainian higher education institutions included in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, has improved its performance and currently ranks 6th. It should be noted that the ranking consists of 130 educational institutions in Ukraine.
Recall that the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Laboratory, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain.
The initial goal of the ranking is to promote the presence of science on the Internet, supporting Open Access initiatives to significantly increase the dissemination of scientific and cultural knowledge generated by universities. To achieve this goal, the publication of the ranking is one of the most powerful and successful tools for launching and consolidating change processes in academia, increasing scientists’ commitment and developing much-needed long-term strategies.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is not a ranking of university websites; it is a ranking of universities themselves. It uses both webmetric and bibliometric (research) indicators. That is, the goal of the ranking is not to evaluate websites, their design or usability, or the popularity of their content according to the number of visits. Web indicators are assessed through a thorough, comprehensive assessment of the university’s global performance, taking into account its activities and results, their significance, and impact. Its main goal is to promote open access to the knowledge that the university provides.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is the most significant academic ranking of higher education institutions, providing independent, objective, free, and open scientific information on the performance of universities from around the world every six months (in July and January).
